Family and Adult Workshops

EMPOWERMENT DAY
Want your students to learn to be responsible for their own learning? Are they worried about how they will do in high school. This full day of fun, structured activities is designed for middle school students and their parents to learn ways to identify learning and cognitive strengths and build personal strategy banks based on their own natural preferences. Parents learn to coach their students in the strategies of empowerment. This is a wonderful way to get families thinking about effective transition planning.

CAN I MAKE IT?

Want to see empowerment in action! This innovative, nationally recognized course incorporates all the elements of a successful transition program for college bound students and their concerned parents. It facilitates effective and appropriate college selection and transition, acknowledging and supporting the cooperation between student, parent and school. As students learn to become stronger self advocates, parents learn how to support this necessary change in roles. This program has been selected as a model transition program by NY State and by the Transition Institute at the University of Illinois and the State of Colorado. You provide the location, 10-12 high school students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, their parents and some teachers/staff who are interested in turnkey training, and we will do this twenty hour program for you.

Students will:
• Develop a self-advocacy portfolio to prepare them for effective post
   secondary transition
• Master the skills of effective self-disclosure and self-advocacy within a post
   secondary setting
• Create a personal strategy bank of successful approaches to post secondary
   education.

Parents will:
• Understand the steps toward transition to college for a student with a disability
• Learn to provide coaching in self advocacy
• Develop a time line of tasks for college search, admission, and attendance.

Staff members will:

• See effective self advocacy in action
• Develop insights and skills into applying the 39 strategies from I can't to I can
• Master the skills necessary to turnkey individual modules of this
program
• Develop a plan for implementation of essential features into their existing
   communities

Potentize

Staff are encouraged to sit in so they can experience the power of the 30+ strategies that are embedded in this unique and exciting program. It is taught in community colleges, in agencies, and in her own office. This course is VESID approved and can be taken for one academic credit through the SUNY system.
