People Smart

"I am so glad I came. I understand myself so much better now. "
S.J., student at SUNY Geneseo

"This has been so helpful. My daughter has struggled for so long and no one ever gave us any specific ways to help. Until now, we just punished her for being lazy. Now we really understand what is going for her and what we can
do about it."
M.L., parent of a middle school child

"I have always had trouble in school. I hated reading. In my new job, I have to read and I have been so frustrated. I like my job and now I know what to do to compensate. Thank you."
J.R., local businessman

"I failed my certification exam three times before I came here. Other people told me to study harder. Now I know that I just needed to study smarter; using my strengths. I wish I had known this years ago."
S.J., professional

"I had been tested before, in school, but it felt like all they did was focus on my problems, the things I couldn't do. This assessment made sense to me. It feels good to know that there are lots of things I am good at, and there are ways I can learn. Now I really feel confident about my choices for college and my future.
A. L. , high school student

A unique assessment for people who want to understand more about how they learn

Dear Editor,
I wanted to write you to tell you how important two of your books are to me. As a gift I was given Magnificent Mind Masters Multiplication and Brilliant Brain Selects Spelling Strategies.

Last year in 7th grade I still was having trouble with some of my multiplication tables and it was affecting my grade in math because even though I knew how to do the problem I was losing points for multiplication errors. The different strategies helped me to learn and remember the ones I was having trouble with and my grade improved.

I am an 8th grader this year and a learning disability has always caused me to have very big problems with spelling. I know that spelling will always be a struggle for me. It would not be so bad if it was just on big words or usual ones but my learning disability makes even the easiest words and very common ones hard for me to spell correctly.

I use the different MI Strategies to help me to remember what a word "looks" like. I use different strategies for different words. It all depends on what the word is and which one of my eight intelligences will work best in helping me the most.

What I like the very most about Brilliant Brain Selects Spelling Strategies is that right in your book it talks about spelling machines/checkers. I have never seen a book for kids that has every said anything about using a spelling machines before. When I read that right there in your book I did not feel like I was the only kid who needs to use one because if I was I do not think it would be worth mentioning just for one kid! It made me feel better about myself and it let me know there are other people just like me. And the fact that it was talked about right there in the book kind of said to me, "you're okay!", and I liked that.

It's hard being a kid with a learning disability, especially when you're smart but it's hard for you to show it because you're spelling is so poor, but books like these help. I am glad that Ellen Arnold wrote them and that she knows how to help kids learn things that are difficult for them. I only wish I had had the books a lot sooner!

Sincerely,
J.D., Ganada, New York
